From Solar PV to Smart AC — Devin’s Story
How It Started
Smart AC Systems was founded by Devin Ruiz, one of Hawaii’s early solar PV pioneers. Through his first company, Solar Training Institute, Devin helped train hundreds of contractors and installers across the islands — teaching safe installation practices and preparing them for top-tier solar certifications.
In 2012, under the name STI Solar, Devin’s team began installing solar panel systems on Oahu and later on Kauai, working on everything from family homes to large commercial projects.
Why Smart AC Systems Was Created
As more customers asked for help with their air conditioning, Devin saw the same problem over and over: systems that weren’t sized correctly for the space, weren’t optimized for local weather, and used more power than they needed to.
Smart AC Systems was created to solve that. In 2020, the team completed a landmark project installing nearly 800 Daikin split AC units at a major resort in Princeville, Kaua‘i — one of the largest vacation ownership properties in the world. That project cemented Smart AC Systems as one of Hawai‘i’s fastest-growing AC companies.
